Psychotherapy Clinical Training
The Psychotherapy Clinical Training at 10 Windsor Walk Centre for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy prepares practitioners for professional work as psychotherapists within the NHS, public sector and independent private practice.
The next intake will begin in September 2027.
Our programme combines rigorous theoretical study with personal psychotherapy, supervised clinical practice, reflective learning and ongoing professional development. At the heart of the training is the development of an analytic attitude: the capacity to listen carefully, remain curious and reflective, and think about unconscious processes and the complexities of the therapeutic relationship. Students are supported to develop this way of working within lower-frequency psychotherapy and to integrate psychoanalytic thinking with their developing clinical practice.
About the training
The programme brings together:
- Psychoanalytic theory – developing a substantial understanding of classical and contemporary psychoanalytic thinking and its application to clinical work. Developed, taught and supervised by psychoanalysts of the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS).
- Clinical practice – sustained experience of working therapeutically with patients and developing the capacity to formulate and think about clinical material psychoanalytically.
- Clinical supervision – regular supervision providing a space to think analytically about patients, therapeutic relationships and the developing learning from experience.
- Reflective learning – opportunities to bring together theoretical understanding, clinical experience and personal development discussed in a group setting.
- Professional development – developing the professional identity, ethical awareness, judgement and clinical responsibility required for psychotherapeutic practice.
- Personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy – an essential component of the training, supporting students’ personal and professional development and deepening their understanding of the therapeutic process.
Together, these elements support the gradual development of a professional psychotherapist, registered within the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) category of Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, able to work thoughtfully and independently in contemporary clinical settings.
A psychoanalytic approach
A central aim of the programme is to cultivate an analytic attitude: a way of listening and thinking that attends to unconscious communication, transference and countertransference, emotional experience and the meanings that emerge within the therapeutic relationship.
The emphasis throughout is on bringing theory into meaningful dialogue with clinical experience.
Students encounter a range of psychoanalytic perspectives and are encouraged to think critically and creatively about theory, to tolerate uncertainty, bear complexity, and gradually to develop their own clinical understanding.
The training is grounded in the traditions of the British Psychoanalytical Society while engaging with the development and application of psychoanalytic ideas in contemporary psychotherapy.
Who is the training for?
The programme is for those who have completed appropriate preclinical study in psychoanalytic theory and are ready to begin clinical training. The usual route into the programme is through completion of the Institute of Psychoanalysis (IoPA) Foundation Course, which provides the recommended preparation for the clinical training. The Foundation Course is administered by IoPA, with teaching also taking place at 10 Windsor Walk.
Other relevant preclinical study and experience may also be considered, including Medical Psychotherapy Higher Training, or another programme of equivalent study recognised by the Training Committee.
If you are unsure whether your previous study and experience meet the entry requirements, please contact us for further information.
Training within a clinical community
10 Windsor Walk Centre for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy was established in 2018 as an independent centre dedicated to psychoanalysis, psychotherapy training and the wider application of psychoanalytic thinking.
Located adjacent to the Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) in South London, the Centre has developed close working relationships with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and with the wider psychoanalytic community.
Founded by psychoanalysts trained through the Institute of Psychoanalysis, 10 Windsor Walk brings together clinical work, education and professional development.
Students therefore train within an active professional community rather than in an educational setting alone. Teaching, clinical work, supervisions, lectures and continuing professional development sit alongside one another, creating opportunities for students to encounter psychoanalytic thinking in a range of clinical and applied contexts.
Small groups allow for close engagement with teachers, supervisors and the training team and support the reflective nature of the programme.
Professional recognition
The 10 Windsor Walk Psychotherapy Clinical Training has been developed in consultation with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), and to meet the educational and professional requirements for registration within the BPC category of Psychodynamic Psychotherapist. As with any new training programme, the accreditation process will occur continuously throughout the course, with the BPC’s final review and approval expected prior to the first intake’s graduation.
